Where should a reservist start with MPK courses?
Share
The first MPK course is worth choosing by interest, not by rank or years of service. Most people start with either a basic course in military readiness training or preparedness training, because neither requires previous MPK experience.
What MPK is
The Maanpuolustuskoulutusyhdistys, MPK, describes itself as Finland's most comprehensive trainer in comprehensive security. About 5,000 volunteer instructors and organisers take part, and military readiness training is arranged in cooperation with the Finnish Defence Forces. The facts here are checked against MPK's own website (mpk.fi).
Two paths: military training and preparedness training
MPK's offering splits roughly into two directions, and the first course is worth choosing by whichever one is of more interest right now.
| Training type | Content | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Military readiness training | Shooting, combat and weapons training, land, sea and air defence | Participants must be 18 or older |
| Preparedness training | Comprehensive security, everyday disruptions, first aid and communication skills | Open to a wider group |
For a reservist, the natural starting point is often a basic military readiness course, for example basic shooting, because it keeps shooting skills maintained directly. Preparedness training fits better as a start when the interest is broader everyday disruptions rather than weapons training alone.
How to register
Courses are listed in the training calendar at koulutuskalenteri.mpk.fi. Browsing the calendar requires no account and costs nothing. Registering, on the other hand, requires a personal OmaMPK account, which is created automatically the first time you register for a course.
Registration for military readiness training closes 28 days before the course starts, so it is worth finding and booking a course well ahead of time.
Does a course cost money
The course fee varies by content and is shown on each course's own page in the training calendar. If a course is paid, the invoice is sent only after the participant has been accepted, and it is paid through the OmaMPK account.
What to wear to the first course
Military courses mostly use participants' own clothing, except where a course requires specific gear stated separately. Keep layering simple. A base layer, a mid layer and a weather appropriate outer layer cover most autumn and winter courses. A hoodie works here as a mid layer or as an off duty layer before and after training. The hoodie range has both understated and named designs on the same heavy 288 g/m² base.
More on gear generally, and on why readiness does not start with the garment: Readiness does not start with gear.
If a reservist exercise call up has already arrived rather than a voluntary MPK course, the practical next steps are covered here: A reservist exercise call up has arrived, what happens next?
