To be straight about it: DTG softens and wears over years of use. That is not a fault, it is a property of the technique. The print fades gradually and takes on a patina with use. For some people that is a plus: the garment looks lived in. If you expect a print to stay exactly as new for years, DTG is not that technique.
What actually wears a print down
Wear does not come from one cause but from several factors together:
- High heat in the wash and especially in a tumble dryer. It is the single biggest factor.
- Mechanical abrasion: rucksack straps, zips, rough surfaces.
- Frequent washing without turning the garment inside out.
- Bleaching detergents, which eat the colour.
How to extend the print's life
- Turn the hoodie inside out before washing.
- Wash at 30-40 °C with similar colours.
- Avoid tumble drying. Hang it or dry it flat.
- Do not iron over the print; iron from the reverse on a low heat.
- Skip the unnecessary washes. Airing is often enough.
Tip: the biggest risk to a print is heat. Keep the temperatures moderate and leave the dryer alone, and most of the work is already done.

Why the base affects how the print lasts

- The surface moves less, so the print folds and rubs less.
